In the eyes of passers-by, the words “PAR NOUS — POUR NOUS” (“By Us — For Us”) at the very centre of the façade, confirmed that this house was designed as a joint work intended for private use.
Even though Paul did the drawings for the house, he and his wife worked together to design and decorate this home cum workshop. Together they filled it with their multiple works of art by applying the principle of “total art”. In the spirit of “total art”, the distinction between the main art forms (architecture, painting, sculpture) and the minor art forms (decorative arts) disappeared to make room for a global œuvre in which all the art forms, whether visual, furniture, wall coverings, paintings, and everyday objects became part of the architectural design.
