Art Nouveau also inspired itself on English experiences: those of Ruskin and William Morris who, in response to industrialisation, sought a return to nature, to simplicity; those of the Glasgow School of Art with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and those of the Arts & Crafts movements, the Pre-Raphaelites, and so on.
In 1886, the Brussels Royal Academy of Fine Arts created a Department of Decorative Arts. This is where the sgraffito technique was taught.
Sgraffiti are part of our heritage. The finest examples can be found in Art Nouveau. Those by Paul Cauchie, of which 500 have currently been registered, embellish towns throughout Belgium.
